But IWA head coach Chris Warren says the Falcons, who finished third at last year's state meet, had to re-adjust their goals after senior Jessica Needle, their No. 1 runner, transferred to Cypress Ridge prior to the start of the school year.

  • Stephen Hill, Kinkaid's new head football coach, learned something about the Falcons in their recent opener at Anahuac: They don't like to lose. Trailing 16-10 at the half, Kinkaid reeled off 24 unanswered points en route to a 34-16 victory.

  • Lamar head girls cross country coach Robert Collett doesn't know why the Lamar Invitational has suddenly become such a hot ticket. A total of 37 schools and more than 1,200 runners are anticipated for Friday's meet at T.C. Jester Park. The varsity races get under way around 4:15 p.m.

  • St. Pius to host Episcopal
  • It may be early September, but high school football fans should circle one date on their calendar. On Friday night, Episcopal travels to St. Pius in a match-up of two of the area's top private school teams. Episcopal, the preseason No. 1, is the reigning Southwest Preparatory Conference champions. St. Pius, ranked No. 2, is one of the favorites to claim the TAPPS Division I state crown.

  • Football: Knight looks for title double
  • Winning a championship is seldom easy, but Episcopal made it look so during its run to the Southwest Preparatory Conference Division I football crown last fall. The Knights finished 10-1 and were a perfect 7-0 against SPC foes, including a 52-7 rout against Kinkaid in the championship game.

  • It's one of the friendlier rivalries among Houston-area private schools, but Kinkaid-Second Baptist doesn't lack intensity. When the Eagles make the short drive to Kinkaid's Barnhart Stadium (a grand total of 1.3 miles, less than the laps either team runs in practice) on Friday night, both squads will be playing for their football lives.
